Food & drink
Food in Spain is often cheap and substantial, and is heavily influenced by seafood available from the waters surrounding the country. Spanish meals consist of a variety of dishes, ranging from cheese and olives to squid or meat delicacies. Spain is much loved for its varied cuisine, however, there are some dishes that are considered common to most of Spain's regions, such as Paella, a saffron rice full of prawns, shrimp, squid, clams, mussels and many more. Generally speaking, the Spanish people tend to eat at later times than those we are used to in the UK. It is normal for lunch to be served between 1.30 and 3.30pm and dinner any time between 9.30 and midnight. If you can't find any restaurants to serve you early enough then why not try a snack bar that has plenty of snacks to tempt you. The rich cooking in Spain, with its Mediterranean ingredients, will certainly impress any visitor.
Sports and activities
Sport facilities in Spain vary considerably depending on the town or area and are usually excellent in major cities and resort areas. Many towns have all weather sports complexes and there are a range of private country clubs, sports centres and gymnasiums which are available within the cities and resort areas. The majority of hotels and resorts have swimming pools and many also have communal tennis courts and other sports facilities. Spain is a fantastic country to visit for all water sports enthusiasts, with greatly improved facilities, making water skiing and wind surfing more and more popular. A range of sports are available to all visitors, such as golf, cycling, swimming, handball, fishing, hiking and athletics in general. The beach is often a good place for some more gentle sports, making the most of the beautiful sands, the sun and the wonderful atmosphere. Football is the national sport and top teams such as Real Madrid and Barcelona and greatly supported throughout Spain.
