Stockholm has a fantastic reputation for live music and the strong jazz traditions can be mostly appreciated in the smarter bars. Live performances are given in local clubs by both Swedish and international artists, consisting of genres such as classical, jazz, hip hop, electro and death metal, depending on the choice of bar or club. Food and drink
There are a fantastic variety of restaurants here in Stockholm which are bound to suit all tastes. The population in Stockholm is so diverse that the choices of where to eat are endless. Eating out can be fairly expensive, especially in the busier, more popular areas; however, some restaurants offer set meals for a set price which can make your dining experience more affordable. These set meals are called "dagens ratt", and are especially popular during the lunch time period where it consists of non-alcoholic beverages, bread, butter, salad and coffee. Some restaurants also offer cheap 'all you can eat' buffets.
Stockholm has a great variety of markets where you can stock up on supplies, perfect for visitors that are on a budget. There are several markets to choose from, such as Ostermalms Market, Soderhallarna, and the Hotorgetshallen Market, where you can find a selection of small cafes and relatively cheap ethnic food stalls. It is a Swedish tradition to take a break in one of the local cafes or coffee bars to enjoy a coffee and a cookie and just relax. Stockholm is blessed with a great variety of cafes where people can truly enjoy a more personal experience, and could spend hours watching the world go by.
Alcohol is very popular in Sweden but can be quite expensive, however, the winter beverage 'Glogg', which consists of heated sherry, brandy and a variety of spices is essential during the winter months. Stockholm is well known for its fantastic shopping opportunities and is known as a leading design centre, for both contemporary and traditional design. The city centre is home to Nordiska Kompaniet, Stockholms best and oldest department store, offering over 100 department stores. The shops Ahlens and PUB are very popular with visitors as it offers a variety of top fashion items, clothing and accessories.
For a more Bohemian selection of clothing, Sodermalm is the place to visit with its quirky designs and vintage stores. Sodermalm is full of small stores selling new and second hand items, along with a variety of boutiques selling original and creative clothing and accessories. There are also a selection of cafes, restaurants and wonderful galleries to make a perfect day out.
Ostermalm is Stockholms exclusive shopping centre where you can find a range of luxury brands and boutiques, perfect for anyone wanting a true day of shopping. Many of these high fashion stores can be found around Birger Jarlsgatan, Biblioteksgatan, Nybrogatan, Ostermalmstorg and Stureplan. A popular place to visit on a hot summers day is 'Glass Huss', which sells over 50 different kinds of ice creams and sorbets, and 'Marsipanbat', heaven for all marzipan lovers.
